Protect yourself from flu by booking into the flu vaccine clinic at West Cork’s Glengarriff Pharmacy.
Flu is a common viral infection that’s easily spread to other people through coughs and sneezes. Flu symptoms include a fever, headache, sore throat and an aching body. Viruses that cause flu are the most common during the winter months.
Flu strains can change from year to year, which means last year’s vaccination may not protect you from this season’s flu strains. Over time, protection from the flu vaccination also decreases, which is another reason to keep up to date with your flu vaccinations.
The best way to help protect yourself and others from catching and spreading the flu, is to get the flu vaccination every year. Our Winter Flu Vaccination Service is a simple and convenient way to help protect against the flu.

Why should I get the flu vaccine this year?
Flu has been found to be more severe in certain people, such as anyone aged 65 and over, pregnant women, young children, adults with underlying health conditions, and children & adults with weakened immune systems.
The flu vaccine does not prevent COVID-19 in any way, but as both of these viruses have an impact on the respiratory system, if you can prevent the flu, it can be a huge benefit to your overall health, your community and our health service.
What is seasonal/winter flu (influenza)?
Influenza is a highly infectious viral illness which affects the respiratory tract. It can affect all ages and while it is unpleasant; for most people it is generally not life threatening.
What is the winter flu vaccine?
Each year the seasonal flu vaccine contains four common influenza virus strains. The flu virus changes each year and therefore a new flu strain of the vaccine has to be given each year.
How does the vaccine work?
Seasonal flu vaccine helps a person’s immune system to produce antibodies to the flu virus. When someone who has been vaccinated comes into contact with the virus, these antibodies attack the virus.
How soon will it work? Is it safe?
The vaccine starts to work within two weeks. Reactions to the vaccine are generally mild and serious side effects are very rare. The seasonal flu vaccine cannot give you the flu.
Who is eligible for the winter flu vaccine?
The flu vaccine, administered by injection, is available for those aged 18 and over. Children aged two to 17 years can get the nasal flu vaccine. Not only will getting the flu vaccine help protect your child against flu, but it will also help reduce the spread of flu to others.
Being vaccinated at our pharmacy in Glengarriff is likely to provide effective protection against this year’s strain of the winter flu virus; however there may still be a small chance of you catching the flu.
After vaccination it takes between 14 – 21 days to be protected against flu. You cannot catch flu from a flu vaccination.
On rare occasions, anaphylaxis may occur. We have procedures in place to deal with this.

Where and when will the flu clinics be held?
Flu vaccine clinics will be held in our pharmacy in Glengarriff, West Cork. We have a specially designed consultation room for this purpose which protects your confidentiality.
What to expect at your appointment
On the day of your appointment, we will ask you to fill in a questionnaire and consent form and ask you for your PPSN and other details e.g. name of your G.P. The vaccine is given to your upper (non-dominant) arm by deep intramuscular injection.
It’s best to wear a T-shirt or short sleeved top to allow easy access to the upper arm muscle. The vaccination itself takes less than a minute but we ask you to remain on site with us for 15 minutes afterwards in the highly unlikely event of a reaction.
What about side effects?
The most common side effects and symptoms will be mild. The main symptoms include soreness, redness, or swelling where the injection was given. Headache, fever, aches and tiredness may occur.
Some people may experience mild sweating and shivering as their immune system responds to the vaccine but this is not flu and will pass in a day or two.
Seasonal flu vaccines have been given for more than 60 years to millions of people worldwide. Reactions are generally mild and serious side effects are rare.
If you are in any doubt please ask a member of our staff when at the pharmacy here in Glengarriff.
Stop the flu virus spreading
Flu is spread when people cough and sneeze. People then breath in the virus or absorb it through their fingers as they settle on tables and chairs.
You can protect yourself and others by:
- Using a tissue when you cough and sneeze
- Discard the tissue as soon as possible
- Clean your hands with soap and warm water regularly
- Receive the flu vaccine
Protection against Covid-19
The flu vaccine doesn’t protect against COVID-19. It is important to get both the flu vaccine and the COVID-19 vaccine. This is because Flu and COVID-19 are caused by different viruses.
If you have had the COVID-19 vaccine you should still get the flu vaccine.
